Auroras – revontulet

It isn’t too often that one gets to see auroras here in southern Finland. Theoretically there are a few nights per month in winter time, that auroras (solar magnetic impulse) is strong enough to be visible near Helsinki. And of course when that happens we need to have clear skies, and time to go out and wait. So in practise to make these all 3 match, it is pretty rare, at least in my case. If I have an early morning wake-up, I rather spend my time sleeping than freezing outdoors 🙂 But once and awhile one gets lucky and is able to see this nature’s real spectacle.  During the summer I already searched for places nearby, that might fit for aurora photography. I found Rantamo-Seitteli  in town of Järvenpää, it is some 20 min drive from our house. Most importantly there are no obstacles in northern horizon, there is not much light pollution (in our standards) and there is water to catch some nice reflections. So I am pretty happy with the shots I achieved last night (4.11.2018) . I spend nearly 2 hours and would have stayed even longer, but the dew started to cover me and my gear; especially lens started to got foggy.

Revontulet Etelä-Suomen taivaalla

Eipä tätä revontuliherkkua turhan usein näillä Helsingin leveyksillä tuli nautittua. Teoriassahan muutaman kerran kuussa aurinkopurkaus on riittävän voimakas, jotta revontulia näkyy myös meillä. Ja kun siihen yhtälöön pitää sovittaa tietty kirkas tähtitaivas sekä aika ja mahdollisuus lähteä kameran kanssa kyttäilemään, niin käytännössä perin harvoin osuu kaikki kohdilleen. Mutta aina joskus onnistaa. Jo kesällä yritin miettiä lähistöltä sopivia mestoja näihin kuvauksiin ja löysin Järvenpäästä Rantamo Seittelin kosteikot ja lammet. Siellä on esteetön näkymä pohjoiseen, verraten vähän valosaastetta ja mahdollisuus mukaviin heijastuksiin vedenpinnasta. Olen ihan iloinen näistä revontulikuvista mitä onnistuin parin tunnin aikana saamaan. Pidempäänkin olisi viihtynyt, mutta lämpötilan lasku toi kasteen ja kamera ja erityisesti etulinssi alkoi huurtua.
