I am lucky to have a really good friend, who happens to be also a pro-photographer, Pekka He is also a camera gear addict. ( he admits it too 🙂 !) I told him in the summer that I would like to buy used Canon 5dmark2 to get a full frame body in the family, next my loved one, Canon 7Dmk2. He spontaneously said don’t go to 5Dmk 2, it is pretty old build, just consider mark3 instead. I thought it is just pro-talk, but did some research on the web, and once again found out that he is right. (what comes to cameras and photography 😉 ) Indeed mark2 is a fine camera body, but when compared to pretty new 7Dii a bit old fashioned nowadays, especially with focus points, drive speed and sensor sensitivity ISO. Time went by and I noticed that Canon is about to bring a new 5Dmark4 on the market this Autumn. So I told him that if, only if, he is going to move to mark 4, I am interested in mark 3.
Oh yes: you can guess the rest. Now he is a happy owner of brand new Canon 5D mark4 , and I am almost as proud owner of mark3. I haven’t yet got much time to play with it, but enough to find out that it is an awesome body for my needs! I thought that 7dii handles pretty ok high ISO’s but to be honest that was the time I didn’t have any other experience. I still am surprised how little noise there is in the images even with , say ISO6400 or higher. Also a thing that is very handy, is that the overall layout of the buttons and menus are much the same as is in 7Dii. The both bodies use the same battery which is great and convenient.
Pekka shoots the most in studio or other indoor locations, so I warned him that with me his old gear with definitely be used in cold, rainy and dark conditions – somewhere it has never ever been before. Although it wasnt raining, it was dark and rather cold evening I took mark3 to see fireworks in Helsinki with me on Saturday evening. The camera body wasnt shocked about the darkness, just co-operated with me very well. Or at least I am pleased with the results! 🙂
