Our dog should be large, active, a bit of guardian would be fine, healthy, in body and mind, capable to be outdoors. These kinds of thoughts we has, when we’re searching for a new family member.
In our family, our former two dogs were Bernese Mountain Dogs, and it was ‘The breed of all’, but still we were missing something. As we are in love with Italy, we found Maremmanos of course, but we thought that it would be maybe too much as a guardian. I would have liked a German Shepard, or Berger Blanc Suisse but my wife didn’t like the ears, and reputation, of those breeds. She thought they look too much like a wolf. One day I found the Guardian breeds website and there was Pyrenean Mountain Dog . A second later I was searching for a breeder who would live near. Two seconds later I called to Mrs Tuulikki Tammiala-Salonen who lived an hour drive away at that moment. She invited us to visit her and the dogs, which we did some days later. “Oh my, are those really So Large!” we both thought when we entered her property and saw white polar bears running and barking . At first Mrs Tuulikki put us in a test and opened the gate to the dog yard. I was pretty sure that these giants will eat us up, as I had read about the guardian characteristics of the breed. But the moment the dogs had sniffed and approved us in front of Mrs Tuulikki’s eyes, they nearly were sitting on our laps and asking for cuddles… Mrs Tuulikki and her daughter Ms Juulia gave us very good info about the breed and we also borrowed some books. Later in the Summer 2008 we were on a visit again and we knew that there would be 3 puppies to see. She told us at the other male was still looking for a active and loving home. But we had one problem. We had already booked a vacation for the Summer 2009, and we’d need a place where a puppy would stay while we ‘re in Italy. Mrs Tuulikki solved the problem when saying that Giusto would be welcome to her place for 2 weeks then. So, Giusto moved to live with us a year “too early”, but we guess that it is okay with all of us…
