Photographing Aircraft De-icing at Helsinki Airport

I went to shoot some de-icing images for the first time during this winter at Helsinki airport. It was heavy and cold wind and on top of that it was also snowing. It was pretty dang cold to operate the camera and carry the tripod but the circumstances were otherwise nice for this kind of aviation photography. Note to self: remember to tie up the camera strap from hitting the tripod next time.

If Helsinki airport is not always a marvellous place for plane spotters or photographers, de-icing facilities are located aviation geeks in mind 🙂 ! Especially this spot in the near vicinity of RNW 04R offers great views to de-icing apron and stands and also to the taxiway leading to 04R.

There are rocks and small knolls on which you are able to climb, to get the shots over the fences. Just wear boots so you can slosh around in the snow to get the image you want.
